Leon Paul Hunter
Leon Hunter age 64 of Stratford, CT passed away on Monday, December 7th after a long illness. He was preceded in death by parents the Reverend James Perry Hunter and Emily Caroline Gaither Hunter. He is survived by his wife Robyn N. Oliver; siblings Karen Dickerson, Janyce Foote, Jane Perry Bernoudy, James Hunter, Michael Hunter as well as numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
He was born in New London and graduated from New London High School and Eastern CT State University. He served in the United States Marine Corps and was honorably discharged in 1979.
Leon was a member of the CT Hurricanes, a drum and bugle corps from 1991 to 1997, one of his passions. He sang with the Stratford United Methodist Church Choir as well as participated in the annual Palm Sunday Concert. He also loved to play the piano and would entertain family and friends whenever the opportunity presented itself.
Affectionately known as "Hunter", Leon was an avid athlete who enjoyed playing football and basketball. His love of football drew him to earn his coaching certification resulting in his coaching football for over twenty years. He had the privilege of coaching at Bassick and Central High Schools in Bridgeport. From 2001 to 2007, Leon was also co- owner and coach of the CT. Giants, a semi-professional football team.
Leon worked primarily in the social services field upon graduation from college, earning his certification as a drug and alcohol counselor. He worked for various social service agencies before becoming an adult probation officer for the State of CT Judicial Branch.
Leon was loved by all that knew him and will be missed and remembered fondly and never forgotten.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, December 18, 2020 at 11 a.m. in Stratford United Methodist Church, 2600 Main St., Stratford.
